Why are inmates so buff while they can’t even get much protein?

In jail, it was indeed hard to get the protein necessary to build muscle…much harder than I’ve heard that it is to supplement ones protein intake in a state or federal prison.

But all inmates have the advantage of free time…all the time in the world to devote to an all-encompassing pursuit like body sculpting.

So, during rec time, I spent my hours in the universal annex off the half court gymnasium, and in the day room, I would do body weight resistance exercises and pullups beneath the corrugated metal second tier staircase.

And as a work release inmate, I had the distinct advantage of being able to pound powdered protein drinks during office hours.

If an inmate has any advantage over the outside world at all, it’s the ability to pursue a single-minded passion with the intensity that the average person simply can’t muster due to familial and career obligations.

When time is all you have, you learn to make time count.

If you’re Andy Dufrense, you dig a hole.

If you’re Craig Michael Titus, you build a physique.
