Frida Kahlo got married on August 21, 1929, when she was just 22 years old. She married Diego Rivera, a 43-year-old, divorced man who was a communist. The wedding was held at a house in Coyoacán, owned by their close friend Tina Modotti.
To everyone’s surprise, the main dish at the wedding was black mole from Oaxaca, which was made by Diego’s ex-wife, Lupe Marín. Lupe had been known for causing drama because of her jealousy. Along with the mole, there were other traditional Mexican dishes like stuffed chiles, pozole, rice, capirotada, and wedding cake. The drinks included pulque, tequila, and fruit water.
Frida’s mother was upset about the marriage. She had tried everything to stop it. She was very Catholic, and Diego was an atheist and a communist. She felt like something terrible was happening. Frida’s father tried to calm her down, and they left the party early.
Later that night, Lupe Marín walked up to Frida, lifted her skirt, and pointed to her legs. She shouted, “Look! See these sticks? This is what Diego has now instead of my legs!” Frida, who had polio as a child, ran away quickly to escape the teasing from the guests.
This was the wedding of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, 94 years ago.
