What do doctors do in the operating room that they don’t want you to know?

Sometimes they really mess up, and they will never tell you.

It’s Friday night, and on Friday afternoons, my girlfriend has consultation hours in the hospital where she works. Usually, Fridays are fully booked. Usually, she comes home and quietly falls asleep in the sofa.

But today, she got a phone call from a gynecologist.

An open surgery on a pregnant patient had gone horribly wrong, and urgent help was needed. So my girlfriend — urologist — dropped what she could drop, made sure that there was a back-up for the consultations, and hurried to OR.

The gynecologist-colleague was desperate — in open surgery, she had tried an alternative approach because there was a lack of appropriate medical material, and she had caused various deep gashes which she did not know how to solve.

When my girlfriend arrived, her colleague could not really explain why she had tried this totally miserably approach which was bound to fail, live on a patient — just like that.

“That is how they taught me.”

And indeed, that is how they did taught her.

But they did not mention the fact that they always needed urgent help.

And they certainly did not tell the patient.
